Douglas Lichterman
I
wrote this one in 1988. I wanted to evoke the feel of the North African desert,
in honor of my then-girlfriend (and first wife) who is from Morocco. Originally,
this piece had a classical guitar for the melody and solos.
When
I reworked and re-recorded the piece, the rhythm section got faster, funkier and
less mechanical than my original, and my ability to execute the melody with any
credibility on a classical guitar disappeared. Getting Stacey Knights to play it
on soprano sax was a wonderful flash of luck, and Douglas Lichterman’s solo is
sensual, compelling, and mysterious.
